Course Objectives

Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals rely on patient care technicians to assist with the critical day-to-day care some patients require. They provide hands-on assistance to serve patients' basic needs, which greatly impacts the lives of their patients and their patient's families. As a patient care tech,  may be able to perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Provide basic patient care: bathing, feeding, catheter care, etc. 
  • Acquire, distribute and administer patient care supplies
  • Perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness inpatient rooms
  • Accommodate any additional patient needs
  • Obtain EKG readings and monitor vital signs
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families, particularly coping with grief and death

 


Curriculum Components

The course consists of 16 modules of instructional content broken down into respective lessons.


Each module contains detailed lectures and notes, animated video lectures, interactive activities, real-world clinical cases, classmate interaction, laboratory simulations, constant feedback, and support from instructors.

The CPCT program is divided into three parts:

1- The Fundamental Knowledge (modules 1-4)  includes:

2- The Professional Skills (modules 5-7) includes:

    A patient care technician (PCT) is mainly focused on working closely with patients, in conjunction with nurses. PCTs help perform basic care for patients, such as assisting them in using the restroom, serving meals or changing bedding. They may also monitor vital signs and provide emotional support to patients and families.

    Patient Care Technicians can be found working in a variety of healthcare settings, including Hospitals, Home Care, Long-Term Care/Nursing Care Facilities. Patient Care Technicians are rarely found working in physicians’ offices and will often be found working in a wider variety of healthcare settings.

    To become a PCT, you’ll need to have a high school diploma and complete a training program. After completing a training program, you'll be qualified to take the national certification exam.
